Images of seven people were passed on by local police for use in a facial recognition system at King’s Cross in London in an agreement that was done in secret, the details of which have been made public for the first time.

With the use of automated facial recognition (AFR) becoming increasingly common, the UK Biometrics Commissioner Paul Wiles has called on government ministers to instigate an “informed public debate” about the technology.

The use of facial recognition technology in public central London area is continuing to stir controversy with an admission this week that the Metropolitan Police Service shared images with a developer as a part of a trial run of a surveillance system.

Facebook has made a number of changes to the use of facial recognition technology on its platform.

The private firm that monitors the whole King’s Cross area, has confirmed that it is no longer using facial recognition cameras, we are glad to say.
